R.I.E.C.H. (Répertoire des imprimeurs et éditeurs suisses actifs avant 1800) is a unique online resource when it comes to Swiss printers and publishers prior to ca. 1850. Developed and hosted at the Bibliothèque cantonale et universitaire (BCU) in Lausanne, by Silvio Corsini, the R.I.E.CH database is being maintained by rare book librarians from various Swiss cantons. The database originated in a 1999 thesis by Maude Graeppi, supervised at the Haute Ecole de Gestion de Genève by Marianne Tsioli of the Bibliothèque de Genève.
After Maude Graeppi had gathered data on 17th century Genevan printers, the scope of the work was broadened to include more Genevan printers, based on the works of John Rochester Kleinschmidt (18th century) and Hans Joachim Bremme (1560-1585). Then, in a further step, undertaken by the Bibliothèque de Genève, data from Joseph Benzing and David L. Paisey pertaining to printers in German-speaking countries , including Switzerland, were integrated into the database - excluding, however, the two important centres of printing, Basel and Zurich.
In the years since, data have been collaboratively and continuously added and updated by rare book librarians from major libraries throughout Switzerland.
